Shop & Swap- June 15th

The Mirella Project’s first-ever Shop and Swap was nothing short of an amazing first event! The goal of the Shop and Swap was

to focus on the issue of textile waste, being that it is the third-largest contributor to climate change. The hope was to show people that buying second-hand does not only help save the planet but can also be really fun! We wanted to incorporate local businesses to sell products, which were related to our overall goal. On Alex, a local gift shop sold goods such as metal straws, reusable bags, and biodegradable utensils. Another was the Lighthouse Collective, a company that re-designs old clothing into new trendy pieces! We are super excited about how it all came together and are looking forward to hosting more going forward!

Downtown Salmon Arm Farmers Market

Every Saturday, from June until October, we have a booth at the Downtown Salmon Arm Farmers Market. Here we have been giving kids the opportunity to be creative through arts and crafts. As well as having hot coffee on tap for anyone who needs a little pick me up on their Saturday morning. To add to the coffee by donation, we have been running a draw for the people who bring their own mug, each month's prize is a new eco-friendly product donated from different local companies. This experience has been fun and rewarding for the team members of the project since it has allowed us to network and talk about issues that our community faces.

School can be cool! What a fun experience to be a guest at Bastion Elementary School to talk to classes ranging from grades three to five; about climate change and how we can aid the world. We were able to engage all of the kids in discussions about what they have noticed in the world's environment and then, getting them to take note of one action they can do to reduce their impact. For our first-in-class experience, it was amazing to see such a passion for change in the youth of our community. We are looking forward to attending more schools in the fall!
