Hello lovely readers, and welcome to my first ever blog post! For this first edition of How-To with Heidi, I wanted to focus on something that is very prevalent right now in the age of this pandemic: SNACKS! These days many of us are home and have ample time for snacking. But have you ever stopped to think about how highly processed and packaged most snacks are? According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, nearly a quarter of all the garbage that is sent to landfills consists of packaging, the majority of which has been connected to food or beverage items. So this week I decided to look into making my own snacks because I figured, how difficult can it really be? It turns out it is even easier than I expected! I made my own granola bars, cheese crackers, energy bites, and honey roasted nuts. All of those snacks, which will certainly last me for quite a while, only took me three hours to make.
Easy Homemade Granola Bars from Bless This Mess: https://www.blessthismessplease.com/granola-bar-recipe/
First up we have a homemade granola bar. This recipe is super quick and easy and the best thing about it is that the recipe can be modified in so many ways to fit any of your granola bar desires. I personally went with the peanut butter, chocolate chip and pretzel option and let me tell you it is certainly something I didn’t regret! I admit that I scraped the pot clean of the peanut butter-sugar mixture, it was that delicious. One thing I do recommend is to only let your bars set for 5 minutes or so before cutting them. I put mine in the fridge and they more so broke into pieces than sliced into bars.
Honey Roasted Nuts from Sue Bee Honeymaker: https://suebeehomemaker.com/honey-roasted-nuts/
Next are the honey roasted nuts that do not disappoint! These are super easy to make and they are an absolutely addicting snack, once I start eating them it is really hard to stop myself. I only used half the cayenne that was recommended and mine have a nice hint of spice that you can’t quite notice until the very end of your bite, But, if you really love spice then I say go for the full amount.
Homemade Cheez-its from Brit.com:
The third is the cheese cracker that honestly tastes way better than store-bought crackers in my opinion. These are also super easy to make and they’re fun too as you can use cookie cutters to make funky shaped crackers.
Chocolate Peanut Butter No-Bake Energy Bites from Gimme Some Oven: https://www.gimmesomeoven.com/chocolate-peanut-butter-bake-energy-bites/
Last, but certainly not least are some peanut butter energy bites from Gimme Some Oven. These super easy to make bites are just the energy boost that you need before or after your workout or even just as an afternoon pick-me-up snack to get you going again.
I encourage you to at least try one snack recipe and discover just how easy it is to make snacks that taste better than the store-bought version, but that is also much less harmful to our beautiful earth. These snacks are quick so the next rainy day makes yourself a snack chef and when sunny days come around you’ll have tons of amazing homemade snacks waiting for you.
